Street demonstrations in the Arab world have now spread to Jordan.

Opposition supporters in the capital Amman and other cities have been demonstrating against the cost of living and rising inflation.

The demonstrations were led by the Muslim Brotherhood and trade unions.

The march is reported to have been the largest so far this week.

Prime Minister Samir al-Rifai announced wage increases on Thursday to civil servants and the military.

A package of cuts worth $US225 million in the prices of several fuels and staple products, including sugar and rice sold in government outlets, was also announced.

Jordan's deficit is expected to reach $US1.4 billion this year.
