Queensland power stations running low on coal

1:02 pm on 12 January 2011

Power stations are running low on coal stocks in Queensland.

The floods have closed mines and cut roads and railway lines, leaving power stations struggling to get enough coal.

A landslide has cut the coal supply line to the Swanbank power station, which supplies power to a million Brisbane homes.

The ABC reports this is in addition to power cuts made by Energex in Ipswich and Brisbane on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning for safety reasons.

Lost production is expected to cost the Queensland coal industry an estimated $A2 billion at least.
