9:37 am on 10 January 2011

At least 70 people were killed in an Iranian passenger plane crash near the northwestern city of Urumiyeh, a Red Crescent official said.

The official said more than 30 others had been injured, and that the death toll was likely to rise.

The crash occurred near the northwestern city of Urumiyeh on Sunday, in bad weather.

The semi-official Fars news agency said 105 people were on board the plane.

Iranian planes have been involved in a number of accidents over the last few years.

The country's civil fleet is made up of old planes in poor condition due to their age and lack of maintenance.
