The younger son of the late Shah of Iran, Prince Alireza Pahlavi, has killed himself in the United States after a long battle with depression.

His brother Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi said family and friends had been plunged into "great sorrow" at news of the death, at his home in Boston on 4 January. Prince Alireza was aged 44.

"He was deeply disturbed by all the ills fallen upon his beloved homeland" as well as the deaths of his father and sister, said a statement.

Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi was ousted in the Islamic revolution in Iran in 1979. Members of the family later moved to live in exile in the United States.

The Shah died in exile in Egypt in 1980. His daughter Leila Pahlavi died in 2001 in a London hotel room aged 31.
