FIFA Oceania rep to sue paper over corruption claims

An Oceania football official says he is suing a British newspaper over corruption claims.

Reynald Temarii is one of two senior FIFA members banned from football activities this week after the paper claimed they asked for money in exchange for votes on World Cup hosting rights.

Mr Temarii, the Oceania president, and Nigerian Amos Adamu are not allowed to vote in the 2018 and 2022 hosting ballots.

Mr Adamu was banned from football activity for three years and Mr Temarii for one year.

Mr Temarii says FIFA's ethics committee cleared him of all serious corruption and bribery charges after seeing unedited copies of footage from The Sunday Times.

The footage showed him meeting with reporters posing as lobbyists from the United States.

Mr Temarii says he has found 153 errors in a transcript of the recordings and an edited version of the video by the paper uses clips completely out of context.

He says he is looking forward to the legal fight, but it could cost him up to $1 million against the paper, owned by News Corporation.

Mr Adamu - who has pleaded his innocence throughout - was fined $13,000 and Mr Temarii $6,500. Four other FIFA officials, all former executive committee members, have been suspended.

The ballot will proceed on 2 December with 22 voters and nine candidates across the two votes.
