Miners 'had safety fears' on day of collapse

9:08 pm on 20 October 2010

A Chilean politician says he has been told miners expressed safety fears on the day their mine collapsed but were ordered to stay underground.

Thirty-three men were rescued last week after spending more than two months trapped deep in the San Jose mine in northern Chile.

Congressman Carlos Vilches says one of the rescued miners has told him the operations manager turned down a request to evacuate the mine three hours before the disaster.

The mining company's lawyer has rejected the accusations.
