At least eight people have been killed in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, after an attempt by gunmen to rob a row of jewellery shops in the Mansur district ended up in a shootout with security forces.

Reports say the attackers used grenades and small-arms fire to kill three shop-owners, but when they emerged, they were fired on by security forces waiting outside.

Two robbers were killed. Security personnel and bystanders were also among the dead.

Security officials say some insurgent groups have turned to crime to finance their operations.
