Civilians killed by police in Kashmir

6:09 am on 14 September 2010

Fifteen civilians have been shot and killed by police in the deadliest day in Indian-administered Kashmir since protests erupted three months ago.

A police officer was also killed after being run over by a truck.

The BBC reports several government buildings and a Protestant school were set on fire on Monday. A police station was also attacked.

Police fired live ammunition to break up the demonstrations, and confirmed that 18 civilians had been killed.

Scores of Kashmiris have now died since June, when anti-India protests broke out after police shot dead a teenager.

An indefinite curfew remains in place in Srinagar and other major towns in the region.
