Defending champion Kim Clijsters has beaten Vera Zvonareva pf Russia to win the women's singles title at the US Open.

The Belgian player's 6-2, 6-1 win was her third US Open women's title.

Zvonereva went into the final having not dropped a set at the tournament, but Clijsters proved too strong for the Russian, and was barely tested in her 60-minute win.

Clijsters, 27, was playing in her third US Open final, having won the title in 2005 and again in 2009 when she stepped out of a two-year retirement, during which time she gave birth to a baby girl, to become the first wildcard to take the trophy.

Her tough three-sets win over Venus Williams in the semi-finals was her 20th straight win at Flushing Meadows spread over five years.

Zvonareva reached Saturday's final without losing a set and with a huge straight-set win over top seed and last year's runner-up Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark in the semi-finals.

Clijsters has now won 21 US Open matches.
