Anne Frank tree collapses in heavy wind

A giant chestnut tree that had been a comfort to Dutch diarist Anne Frank as she hid from the Nazis in an Amsterdam attic during World War II has collapsed in heavy wind and rain.

The tree was one of the few signs of nature visible to the Jewish teenager from the attic she hid in for more than two years during the war.

Anne Frank died in a concentration camp in 1945.

She mentioned the tree in her diary, which became a worldwide best-seller.

The 150-year old tree near the Anne Frank House, now a museum, had developed fungus and was set to be felled in 2007 due to safety concerns.

Officials and conservationists agreed to secure it with a steel frame to prolong its life.
