Locust warning for parts of Australia

9:54 pm on 2 August 2010

Australia's agriculture minister is warning that parts of the country are set to be hit by the worst locust plague in years.

Tony Burke has urged landowners in parts of New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and South Australia to contact state authorities to order insecticides, the ABC reports.

However, he says some locust eggs have been laid in forests or other areas that may not be sprayed.

Mr Burke says recent warm weather may cause the locusts to appear sooner than expected.
