Commonwealth Games preparations under pressure

12:55 pm on 28 July 2010

With barely 80 days to go to the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, the Indian capital still resembles a giant construction site.

Mounds of debris surround dug-up roads and walkways across the city.

A downpour in New Delhi on Tuesday turned many of the construction sites into a sea of mud.

Former Sports Minister Mani Shankar Aiya says he hopes the monsoon rains will derail efforts to have everything ready on time.

He says money spent on the games should have been channelled into sports facilities in deprived areas of the country.

The New Delhi Games are already the most expensive in history, with an infrastructure and organising budget of $US2.7 billion.

They are due to begin on 3 October.
