Hearing over pay rates for Australian pilots based in NZ

8:29 am on 28 July 2010

Australian pilots claim that the Qantas JetConnect operation in New Zealand is a sham company set up to avoid having to pay Australian pay rates.

The Australian and International Pilots Association have taken Qantas to court to fight for better conditions for employees at JetConnect, which is a fully-owned subsidiary.

They say JetConnect pilots flying trans-Tasman routes are earning up to 40% less than their Australian counterparts.

The ABC reports many people are watching the case as it has wide-ranging implications for all employees working offshore.

The hearing has been adjourned until 4 August.
