6.4 quake strikes off coast of Vanuatu

7:01 pm on 2 July 2010

A 6.4 undersea quake struck off the coast of Vanuatu late on Friday afternoon NZ time.

The United States Geological Survey says the quake was centred 222 kilometres north-north-west of the island of Santo at a depth of 35 kilometres.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii says there is no widespread tsunami threat from the quake.

Police in Vanuatu's capital, Port Vila, say they have had no reports of damage or rising sea levels, but the area in which the quake hit is in the country's remote north-west, with little communications.
