General McChrystal to leave military

8:54 pm on 29 June 2010

The American general sacked last week as commander of NATO-led forces in Afghanistan plans to leave the army.

A spokesperson says General Stanley McChrystal has told the US Army he's going to retire, the ABC reports.

General McChrystal was forced to step down after he and his aides slighted the Obama administration in an interview published in Rolling Stone magazine.

President Barack Obama has nominated General David Petraeus, credited with salvaging the US war in Iraq, to replace General McChrystal at the Kabul headquarters.
