Fiji warming to Russian, Chinese overtures

6:01 pm on 9 June 2010

Fiji's Land Force commander, Brigadier-General Pita Driti, says Fiji is looking more toward Russia and China.

Speaking to Auckland-based Radio Tarana, General Driti said that New Zealand and Australia are bullies who cry over spilt milk, and that China and Russia are now knocking on Fiji's door.

He said that Russia is now more interested in the Pacific.

Relations between the interim regime in Suva and some Pacific Islands Forum countries have cooled further after a Forum ministrial group said the situation in Fiji was worsening.
