Review of all Taliban suspects in Afghan prisons

1:29 pm on 7 June 2010

The Afghan President has ordered a review of all Taliban suspects in the country's prisons.

Hamid Karzai's announcement is the first official response to the jirga or national conference of elders held last week.

He says that where evidence against suspects is doubtful, they must be released.

It is unclear how many people the review will affect: hundreds of prisoners are accused of Taliban involvement. A committee will be set up to oversee the investigation of each case.

Meanwhile, Mr Karzai's office says Interior Minister Hanif Atmar and intelligence chief Amrullah Saleh have resigned over the Taliban attack on the jirga. No delegates were injured but rockets were fired at the venue.

The office says the explanations given for how the attack was able to happen were "not satisfactory" and Mr Karzai had accepted the two resignations.

Meanwhile, Nato says five international troops were killed in three separate incidents in Afghanistan on Sunday.
