A film from Thailand about re-incarnation has won the Palme D'Or at this year's Cannes film festival.

Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives is directed by Apichatpong Weerasethaku.

It is based on a book by a Buddhist monk and traces a man's final days in a mixture of fantasy and reality, as he's visited by his wife's ghost.

It is the first Asian film to win the Palme d'Or since 1997.

Juliette Binoche was recognized as best actress for her role in Certified Copy.

The award for best male actor was shared by Javier Bardem for Biutiful and Elio Germano for Our Life.
