United States President Barack Obama says the US cannot act alone in the world, and must take a more multilateral approach to foreign policy.
In a speech ahead of the unveiling of his national security strategy next week, President Obama said the US has performed well when it is part of an alliance - such as during Second World War or the Cold War.
Mr Obama said the US has not succeeded when it has stepped outside the international community.
His remarks symbolise a break from the more unilateral approach of his predecessor, George Bush, although he didn't mention Mr Bush by name.
