US pledge to reduce civilian casualties in Afghanistan

President Barack Obama has promised the Afghan leader that the United States will do more to reduce the number of civilians killed or wounded in Afghanistan.

Figures from the Pentagon show 90 civilians were killed by American or NATO forces in the first four months of this year, compared with 51 in the same period last year, the BBC reports.

At a joint news conference with Hamid Karzai, Mr Obama said he took no pleasure in hearing reports of civilian deaths, adding that the US military would work assiduously to reduce the number of such fatalities.

NATO says 90 Afghan civilians were killed by its personnel in the first four months of this year - an increase of 76% compared with the same period last year.

The administration places that increase in the context of the growing American presence in Afghanistan, following Mr Obama's announcement of a surge in troop numbers in December last year.
