NATO troops have marched in Red Square in Moscow alongside Russian soldiers, to mark the 65th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany.

Soldiers from Britain, France, Poland and the United States marched alongside 10,000 Russian troops. It was the first time foreign troops have marched there since 1945.

Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany was among two dozen world leaders in attendance.

The parade also included tanks, ballistic missiles and a fly-past of 127 aircraft.

The BBC reports it was the largest display of Russia's military hardware since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

The event was to mark VE Day on 8 May 1945.
