Veteran British actor Ian Carmichael, whose roles included Bertie Wooster and Lord Peter Wimsey in BBC television dramas, has died at the age of 89.
The star of film and TV from the 1950s to the 1970s made his name in movies for the Boulting Brothers including Private's Progress (1956) and I'm All Right Jack (1959) alongside Peter Sellers.
During the 1960s and 1970s he was successful in parts where he was cast as a loveable buffoon.
On television, his role as Bertie Wooster in BBC drama series The World of Wooster was particularly popular with audiences.
This was followed by another well-watched role as Lord Peter Wimsey in several of the BBC drama series based on the mystery novels by Dorothy L Sayers.
Carmichael was appointed an OBE in 2003.
He died peacefully on Friday at his home in the Esk Valley on the North York Moors, the BBC reports.
