An Indian man who told police he was set on fire by a group of men in Melbourne has been charged with making a false report to police.
Jaspreet Singh, 29, told police he was set on fire by four men on 8 January.
Police say he accidentally set himself alight while trying to set his car on fire.
Mr Singh was treated for burns to 15% of his body.
The ABC reports he will return to court in March to face charges of making a false report to police and criminal damage with a view to gain financial advantage.
The fire occurred a week after an Indian man, Nitin Garg, 21, was stabbed to death in Melbourne on his way to work.
The killing and other incidents of assault sparked outrage in India.
