King Charles III coronation: Live updates as Britain's new monarch officially ascends throne

1:51 am on 7 May 2023

King Charles III has been crowned at Westminster Abbey while his wife Camilla has been crowned Queen in the first Coronation in 70 years.

Although the procession and following service feature customs dating back 1000 years, there has been a departure from tradition with some new aspects including the involvement of leaders from other faiths, female clergy, the royal monarch attire, and the pledging of allegiance to the King.

The 74-year-old is the oldest person to take on the British throne after his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, died last year in September.

He was also the longest-serving heir apparent and Prince of Wales in British history. His son, Prince William, now has taken the title.

Camilla, 75, has officially become the Queen - a move from her title of Queen Consort which was agreed upon with the King's mother before her death.

A number of events will take place in New Zealand to mark the King's coronation over the weekend.
