The honour goes to the song at the top of the British music charts at Christmas, with the race for the top spot - now going for seven decades - becoming an institution in the country.

Husband and wife duo Mark and Roxanne Hoyle, who go by the name LadBaby, this year achieved their fourth consecutive Christmas number one with their song Sausage Rolls For Everyone, featuring Ed Sheeran and Elton John.

They are the first artists to have four consecutive Christmas number one hits, according to the Official Charts Company.

They are also now level with The Beatles for the most number one Christmas songs of all time, with the legendary British band securing the top spot in 1963-65 and 1967.

LadBaby have been recording songs that are their own takes on previous hits but with a twist - every song is about sausage rolls.

The duo record the songs to raise money and awareness for the Trussell Trust food bank charity.

"Thank you to EVERYONE for helping us make history for the [Trussell Trust] food bank charity with the power of Sausage Rolls," the pair said in a statement.

The Hoyles, who live in Nottinghamshire, first topped the Christmas charts in 2018 with We Built This City, a cover of Starship's 1985 song.

Over the next two years they recorded I Love Sausage Rolls (their take on The Arrows/Joan Jett's I Love Rock 'n' Roll) and Don't Stop Me Eatin' (a satirical version of Journey's Don't Stop Believin').

"Thank you for helping us raise the profile, raise money and awareness for the Trussell Trust, the food banks in the UK and helping support the 14 million people in this country that are living below the poverty line. We couldn't have done it without you," Mark Hoyle said.

Martin Talbot, chief executive of the Official Charts Company, said it was an achievement which should be celebrated.

"To have matched The Beatles and Spice Girls was a fantastic feat last year, but to top them both, while raising money and awareness for foodbank providers The Trussell Trust, is remarkable."

Sheeran and John are also credited with achieving this year's Christmas hit.

It is the second time Sheeran has had the UK Christmas Number 1, with his song Perfect reaching the top of the British charts at Christmas in 2017.

This is the first time John has had a Christmas number one.

English star Adele has the number one album for Christmas this year, with 30.

It is the second time the singer-songwriter has had the top album at Christmas, also having the top spot in 2015 with her album, 25.
