No tsunami warning was issued for the quake, at a depth of about 53 kilometres.

Another quake, also measuring magnitude 6, hit eastern Iran, near the city of Kerman. It was initially reported as 6.3. The US Geological Survey said it was very shallow, at a depth of 10 kilometres, which would have amplified the shaking.

And in a rare event for the United State's northeast coast, a 4.1 earthquake, has struck in the state of Delaware, less than 17 kilometres from the city of Dover.

The shallow quake was also felt in Philadelphia in neighbouring Pennsylvania.
