Large quake hits near Japan

A magnitude 6.8 earthquake has hit off Japan's main island Honshu, the US Geological Survey says.

The quake was centred 119 km southeast of Morioka at a depth of 39 km, it said.

It was recorded at about 9.15am (NZST).

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said there was no threat of a tsunami from the earthquake.
