A British man caught with child pornography while visiting New Zealand has avoided a prison sentence in England.
In October 2013, Sean Jamieson left a computer hard-drive in a rental car that was found to contain more than 50,000 images of children being sexually abused.
New Zealand police contacted their counterparts in north-east England, and Jamieson later admitted charges of making indecent photographs of children and possessing extreme pornography.
The Northern Echo newspaper reports the Teesside Crown Court has given him a community sentence with three years of supervision, and an order to attend a sex offenders' treatment programme.
His computer and internet use have also been restricted.
A spokesperson for the Stop Demand Foundation, Denise Ritchie, told Morning Report the fact he is not in prison highlights a weakness in the justice system.
"If you had all of these children that were in the 52,000-odd images appear before a judge all of these guys would be getting prison.
"But somehow because they're invisible the offending is almost trivialised."
