A New Zealand man has escaped an avalanche in a Japanese ski resort which killed two other people he was skiing with.

The avalanche happened in the Ryuoo Ski Park in Nagano, about 400 kilometres northwest of Tokyo.

The New Zealander was skiing off-piste in a group of four when the avalanche swept 200 metres down the mountain, killing two Argentinian men whose bodies were found buried in the snow.

A day earlier there had been two avalanches at a resort north of Nagano, killing two people.
