There are media reports in the United States say that Facebook and Apple are covering the costs for female workers to freeze their eggs to delay child-bearing which could hamper their careers.

NBC News reported that the companies were covering up to about $US22,000 for the egg-freezing procedure and storage.

The procedure was reportedly gaining popularity as more women delayed plans to start a family.

High-tech firms had also been under pressure to address the gender imbalance in the male-dominated sector.

Both Facebook and Apple have declined to comment on the reports.
