Egypt's interim government has resigned just weeks before a presidential poll.

In an address broadcast on state television Prime Minister Hazem el-Beblawi announced the entire cabinet has submitted its resignation to the president.

He gave no clear reason but some believe it is to pave the way for the Defence Minister Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to announce a run for president.

The ABC reports the interim government has also been plagued by economic challenges including public sector strikes.

It was installed last July in the days after the public uprising that led to the removal of President Mohammed Morsi.
