Human remains have been found near where a 12-year-old Indigenous boy was taken by a crocodile in the Northern Territory of Australia.

Three crocs were shot in the search for the animal that snatched the boy while he was swimming with four friends in a billabong in Kakadu National Park on Sunday.

Another boy was bitten, but released during the incident, the ABC reports.

Acting Police Commander Michael White said evidence had been located that "strongly indicated" the boy died in the attack.

Boat crews were told to shoot any saltwater crocodiles of between 2 metres and 2.5 metres spotted in the area, based on measurements of bite marks on the arms of the boy who survived.
