A fresh tropical cyclone is expected to hit New Caledonia on Saturday night, before gathering strength as it heads south towards Norfolk Island and New Zealand.

A warning has gone out to all shipping in the path of Cyclone June to expect heavy swells and gale force winds.

AFP reports June, which formed in the Coral Sea near Solomon Islands as a category one cyclone, is expected to intensify to category two before hitting Norfolk Island on Sunday.

Australia's Bureau of Meteorology expects prolonged gale force winds, heavy rain and moderate to heavy swells around Norfolk Island.

In New Zealand, MetService expects gusty and heavy rain from the storm to move southeastwards across the North Island on Tuesday.
