Campers evacuated as bushfire rages

9:11 pm on 1 January 2014

Australian authorities are evacuating about 900 campers in the path of a large bushfire on North Stradbroke Island off Brisbane.

The blaze was sparked by a lightning strike over the weekend and was expected to move into the popular Main Beach on Wednesday evening (local time).

Campers have little choice but to leave as the threat worsens with hotter weather conditions due in coming days, the ABC reports.

Authorities hope to have the area south of the causeway on North Stradbroke Island evacuated by 4pm.

Police advised campers to tell authorities when they have left Main Beach.

Cyclone knocks out power

More than 2000 houses and businesses are still without power in Western Australia's Pilbara area following a tropical cyclone.

Christine crossed the coast on Monday at midnight (local time), destroying four homes, uprooting numerous trees and bringing down power lines.

It has been downgraded to a tropical low, but continued to bring heavy rain as it moved to other parts of the country on Wednesday.
