A man has been killed in a shark attack at a popular surfing spot about 270km south of Perth in Western Australia.

It's believed the attack happened just after 9am at the Left Handers break in Gracetown.

St John Ambulance are at the scene and Left Handers has been closed with people advised to avoid the area.

The state Fisheries Department issued an "imminent threat" order and fisheries officers were sent to the area.

Surfer Tom Jones says he was at nearby Big Rock beach at the time of the attack and knows of the victim.

"Cop cars rolled up at Lefties and we thought, definitely another shark attack," he said, adding, "I know of him, and he was pretty young to die".
