A jockey in Australia has died from head injuries after falling in a race at the Sunshine Coast Turf Club.

Desiree Gill, 45, whose racing career spanned 30 years, fell heavily from her mount Celtic Ambition on Saturday evening.

She never regained consciousness.

Gill won the South-East Queensland Country premiership for the past two years and rode four winners at Bundaberg on Melbourne Cup day.

AAP reports an inquiry into the fall has been adjourned by stewards.
