Police in Brazil say they have charged Canadian singer Justin Bieber with defacing a wall in Rio de Janeiro.

Defacing buildings is a crime in Brazil punishable by up to one year in jail or a fine.

Pictures on Brazilian media show the 19-year-old singer painting the wall of an abandoned hotel, a security guard on one side and a police car parked on the other.

Rio police went to the singer's hotel on Tuesday night but didn't find him. The case was registered in the police station.

It emerged that Bieber had authorisation from the City Hall to paint at a sports facility nearby, but members of his entourage claim he chose a different location to avoid his fans, the BBC reports.

Police argued the consent did not extend to any other places and Bieber may receive a fine.
