At least nine people are feared dead after a landslide tore through a village in Papua New Guinea's rugged Highlands region following torrential rain.
The chief of police in the Eastern Highlands province, John Kale, says an enormous flow of mud from a nearby mountain buried at least half a dozen homes in the village of Kenagi on Saturday evening.
The Post Courier newspaper reports villagers were sleeping when the massive slip of earth, trees and debris crashed down the mountain. A 15-seater bus is believed buried in the debris.
A second mudslip early on Sunday morning blocked the route to Lae and stranded travellers.
One body has been recovered.
