Jewels found on Mt Blanc

A mountain climber has discovered a cache of jewels in the French Alps, which are thought to have been aboard a plane that crashed half a century ago.

The climber found the emeralds, rubies and sapphires while climbing on a glacier off Mont Blanc.

The ABC reports they were in a metal box marked "made in India", and are thought to have been on an Air India flight from Mumbai to New York via Geneva, which crashed in the mountains in 1966, killing all 117 people on board.

Last year a bag of diplomatic post from the crash was also discovered.
