UN disarmament chief optimistic about Syria

The United Nations High Representative for Disarmament Affairs is optimistic a meeting of world leaders at the General Assembly will help speed up talks aimed at ending the conflict in Syria.

Angela Kane says the UN's report into the use of chemical weapons in Syria has given impetus to the peace process.

She says the parties to the conflict cannot be forced to negotiate, but meetings in New York this week among all the interested parties should make progress.

"There has to be a will to come to the table and I think that will is now increasingly there," she says.

Ms Kane says she is hopeful a conference to resolve the conflict could be held before the end of the year.
