Another asylum boat reaches Christmas Island

5:35 am on 23 September 2013

Another boat carrying about 30 asylum-seekers arrived at Christmas Island on Sunday afternoon.

The federal government is not providing any details of the boat, but the ABC has been told from people on Christmas Island that the passengers include men, women and children from the Middle East.

Since the new government was sworn in last week, immigration minister Scott Morrison has imposed restrictions on the flow of information about asylum seeker boats.

The previous government used to alert the media every time a boat was intercepted, but the ABC reports Mr Morrison will provide only weekly briefings - the first of which will be on Monday.

"Additional briefings will be undertaken as necessary in relation to specific events. People smugglers use information as a tactic to ply their trade,'' Mr Morrison said in a statement.

AAP reports the latest arrival brings the total to eight since 7 September. Shire councillor Gordon Thomson told AAP that HMAS Maitland escorted the boat to the island.
