Really fast transport system proposed

Plans for a transport system that would carry people between cities faster than the speed of sound has been proposed by an American inventor.

Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, who developed electric cars, is proposing a system whereby passengers would sit in capsules that would be fired along a low-pressure tube using solar energy.

Mr Musk has proposed that the Hyperloop system could carry passengers between Los Angeles and San Francisco in about half an hour.

Capsules could depart as often as every 30 seconds and could also carry cars, travelling at up to 760mph.

Capsules could depart as often as every 30 seconds and could also carry cars, travelling at up to 1220km per hour.

Mr Musk said he would likely build a prototype of the concept, but not immediately, as he is busy with SpaceX, his commercial space project.

A demonstration model would take up to four years to complete, he said.

He said Hyperloop would never crash and would be immune to the weather.
