A new workplace survey says more Australian businesses prefer male employees to female employees.

The research by Kronos, a management consultancy company, found 38% of correspondents believe men are better employees than women, while just 19% of employers prefer females.

The ABC reports the survey of 500 employers also found 40% prefer employees who do not have children, compared to 18% who prefer those who do.

Kronos spokesperson Peter Harte said he was amazedby the findings.

The Australian Human Rights Commission said the findings are distressing.
