Comedian Mel Smith dead

Comedian Mel Smith, known for the British TV series Alas Smith and Jones and Not the Nine O'Clock News, has died from a heart attack.

His agent said Smith, 60, died at his home in northwest London.

Tributes have been paid to the late star.

Co-star Griff Rhys Jones who had been friends with Smith for 35 years, described him as someone who "inspired love and utter loyalty".

Broadcaster Stephen Fry wrote on Twitter that Smith was "kind, funny and wonderful to know".

Rowan Atkinson said he was "truly sad" to hear about the death.

"He was also an excellent theatre and movie director, doing a wonderful job on the first Mr Bean movie.''
