Nominations for the Emmy television awards in the United States include a drama series broadcast online for the first time.

House of Cards, a political thriller shown by Netflix, has been nominated for best drama. It is a remake of a 1990 BBC series.

Analysts say the show's recognition is a reflection of the changing way people use the internet for entertainment.

Two other series, the thriller, American Horror Story: Asylum and Game of Thrones received most of the nominations: 17 for the former including best mini series and 16 for the latter.

Behind the Candelabra, a Liberace biopic starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, received 15 nominations. A HBO television production, it was released in cinemas outside the United States.

HBO received 108 nominations in total and is the most-nominated network for the 12th consecutive year.
