At least 18 people have been killed in a crash between a bus and a lorry carrying gravel near Moscow.

Another 25 people were injured in the incident, which happened in the village of Oznobishin, about 40km south of the Russian capital, on Saturday.

Images from the scene showed the lorry lying on its side and the bus broken in half by the impact.

Monday has been declared a day of mourning in Moscow.

The BBC reports at least 30 ambulance crews attended the scene. Some of the casualties were flown to hospital by helicopter.

Moscow health department chief Georgy Golukhov told Ria Novosti that some injured had been hit by gravel thrown from the lorry trailer.
