An elderly nun is in hospital with a head injury after a woman tried to steal her purse in the centre of Sydney.

Police said the Catholic nun, 77, had withdrawn money from an ATM on Castlereagh Street when a woman tried to grab her purse about 1pm on Friday.

A struggle ensued and the nun was knocked to the ground, hitting her head on a wall.

She managed to hold on to her purse and bystanders came to her aid.

AAP reports a woman, 49, was charged with assault with intent to rob. She will appear in Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday.

The nun is being treated at St Vincent's Hospital.
