A woman has been found alive after 17 days beneath the remains of a building that collapsed in Dhaka.

The woman, named Reshma, was found in the remains of the second floor of the Rana Plaza, at about 3.15pm on Friday. Rescuers heard her crying: "Please save me."

She was pulled from the ruins in an operation broadcast live on television as clerics asked the crowds on onlookers to pray for her.

Reshma was taken to hospital, but is not thought to have serious injuries.

More than 1000 are now confirmed dead, most of them women working in clothes factories. Another 2437 people had been rescued, of whom about 1000 had suffered serious injuries.

The eight-storey building collapsed on the morning of 24 April, after cracks appeared in its structure the day before.

Preliminary findings of an inquiry by the Bangladesh government blamed vibrations from four giant generators on the upper floors for triggering the collapse.

Police have arrested 12 people for forcing people to work on the day of the disaster.
