Indonesian judge facing sack over rape statement

A senior Indonesian judge is facing dismissal for saying rape victims received pleasure from the crime.

A judicial commission has recommended Judge Daming Sunusi's dismissal, an official said on Monday.

The judge sparked outrage when he said: "The one raped and the rapist both enjoy it."

Judge Sunusi made the remark while answering a question during an interview for a Supreme Court position and was trying to explain why rapists should not be executed.

Judicial spokesman Asep Rahmat Fajar told AFP an inquiry had "concluded he had breached the judicial code of ethics" with respect to the proper conduct of judges.

"We recommended a heavy sanction, that he be dismissed from his profession as a judge. He will now face the ethics tribunal where he has the opportunity to defend himself."

Judge Sunusi has apologised for the comment, insisting that he was trying to lighten the mood of the tense interview.

The house of representatives' ethics council is also considering an investigation into politicians who reportedly laughed at his remarks, the Jakarta Globe has reported.
