Colosseum was richly decorated

Restoration work on the Colosseum in Rome has produced evidence that the building was more richly decorated in its heyday 2000 years ago than it is now.

The modern Colosseum has been stripped back to bare stone, but Italian media report that restorers have found traces of paint and drawings including an arrow and a laurel crown.

There are also signs of crude grafitti. Two phallic symbols were found scrawled near what would have been a urinal.
